The CEO’s Message

Dear Readers and Maritime Colleagues,

Since the publication of our inaugural Sustainability Report in 2020, the Thome Group has made significant progress in aligning itself with the UN Sustainable Development Goals. I am, therefore, delighted to share with you our second voluntary Sustainability Report covering the year 2021.

The fact that we have been able to make progress on sustainability issues against a backdrop of international sanctions against Russia and the continuing disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic is a testament to the dedication of our staff. We have successfully embraced a hybrid working style across the group to improve our employee’s work/life balance. This has a positive knock-on effect of reducing work commutes which reduces our carbon footprint overall as a company.

Recent office moves in Mumbai and Singapore have also given us the chance to review our office environments with less formal seating arrangements to maximize the available space and encourage more interaction between departments. We have also reviewed our use of paper documents and are actively encouraging staff to reduce the amount of paper in the office by reviewing our processes and reducing the need for paper trails by switching to digital alternatives.

Regarding our health and safety record, the company’s overall results have improved since 2020 which is encouraging as we aim to work towards zero injuries, incidents, and accidents. This has been due to various campaigns and initiatives throughout the year with consistent communications and messaging both onboard and ashore. Fewer incidents of this nature mean fewer resources are used reducing our requirements for fresh supplies.

We have also made major strides with regards to plastics reduction and also minimizing our general onboard waste generation which we will continue to improve in the future.
Our teams are also heavily invested in helping our customers and principals evaluate the switch to using cleaner fuels to work towards the IMO’s target of reducing shipping’s GHG emissions by 50% by 2050.

As a group we remain committed to constantly improving our approach to sustainability while remaining competitive and offering our customers quality services.

I hope you will find this report both informative and inspiring as we can all make improvements to help shape a more sustainable future.

Yours sincerely,

Olav Nortun
