Day of the Seafarers 2022

Dear Maritime Colleague,

As you know, today is when we celebrate the ‘Day of the Seafarer’ and this year’s theme from the International Maritime Organization (IMO) is: “Your voyage- then and now, share your journey.”

The IMO encourages seafarers to share experiences with them by posting two photos, one of your first voyage and another of your latest voyage. Using the hashtag #SeafarerJourney, tell them what your opinion has changed about your journey in shipping during the intervening years.

At Thome, we have always been supportive of our seafarers’ journeys. Everyone is different, and every journey is personal to the individual. As a leading ship manager, we like to ensure that every effort is made to help you on that journey so you can achieve your personal goals and aims in life.

Our colleagues onboard have faced unprecedented challenges with the crew change crisis due to the pandemic, the increase in regulatory requirements, including more mandatory reports, and the rapid advances in new technology, which have changed how we work.

As they say, “the only constant is change.”; but, Thome has always been mindful that its workforce is the essential factor in its success. This is why we have created an inclusive atmosphere where we encourage sharing ideas and experiences amongst our teams.

Communication is key so views can be shared and ideas discussed, which is why we have regular conferences, training sessions, and workshops.
The Thome Cadet program is also something we are very proud of as we guide and mentor these young people to become future officers.

We have some big challenges to overcome in the next few years as an industry. Some of these challenges are decarbonization, digitalization, and sustainability. This will require us to work together to ensure we create an inclusive community.

I hope you will join us on this collective journey so we can grow and further improve our procedures, protocols, and practices; as the mantra says, “The more you put in, the more you get out.”

Yours sincerely,

Olav Nortun
